A young filmmaker is looking for the love affairs of her father. She will encounter the dreams and decisions of strong women, role models and concepts of relationships from the 20th century and, eventually, her own pursuit of self-determination.
ONE OF MANY is the feature length debut of upcoming director Bigna Tomschin. Bigna’s signature is her detailed view and her courage in pursuing unknown traces and questions, not only with her protagonists but also with herself. She does not find her answers for questions about identity, belonging and gender issues in general world affairs but in the small details of our everyday life, in personal encounters with other people that tell us so much about the bigger picture. Bigna tells all of this in a forthright and poetic way, always with a wink of an eye and a sparkle of self-mockery. She has trained her accurate view especially during her work as an editor. For this she was awarded for her film BLUE BLUE SKY with the German Award for Cinematography for newcomers in the category Editing.
Bigna Tomschin’s ONE OF MANY is a young woman’s examination of her own role concepts in front of history. During the past one hundred years the image we perceive of women’s and men’s role in the society and relationships has changed radically. The freedom of choice for men and, especially, women is an achievement of the 20th century that entails many possibilities but also many questions. What does self-determination mean? And, above all, how did we learn how to deal with this seemingly infinite number of possibilities?
